Laurence earned his Master’s Degree in Political Science from the University of Chicago in 1989. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of California, Davis School of Law in 1995. During law school, Laurence ranked in the top 4% in the moot court competition and served as the assistant coordinator for a unique program that trained foreign lawyers and judges in American law.
Laurence began his legal career at a boutique law firm in San Francisco that specialized in uncovering fraudulent insurance claims. There, Laurence learned to be especially thorough in conducting discovery. In one highly contentious case, Laurence found evidence showing that the owners of a hydroelectric power plant deliberately had sabotaged the plant’s water turbine, leading to a settlement that was very favorable to the insurer. Laurence also worked on insurance coverage disputes and general civil litigation, including personal injury, premises liability, employment, and defamation.
Laurence then turned his attention to complex coverage disputes, working for firms that represented major carriers in coverage/bad faith litigation in both state and federal courts. Laurence handled cases from inception through summary judgment and worked on numerous trial teams. Laurence is experienced in all phases of litigation, including legal research, drafting pleadings, law and motion, discovery, mediation, arbitration, and trial preparation.
